Bikram Seminar – what a day!

um... surfing camel pose?

With his shiny suit, glittering tie and diamond encrusted watch “I can’t see the time, too many diamonds!” he strolled onto the stage to a standing ovation.

I was a little worried I wouldn’t like Bikram. What if I thought he was an arrogant, self absorbed guru and if so, how that would affect my trip? It wasn’t to be the case thankfully, in fact it would be quite hard not to like the guy. He’s definitely a character, and the seminar gave me insight into Bikram and his philosophy and I can safely say, the trip is still on.

With a promise to his guru before leaving India that he would continue his guru’s work, Bikram’s only regret was that he didn’t ask how long for! He has since dedicated his life to yoga and having creating the Bikram Beginning Yoga Class he could have walked away, job done. He now travels the world giving seminars, posture clinics and classes, not to make sure we’re practising the postures perfectly but that if we listen to the teacher’s dialogue and perform the pose to the best we can do, we’ll be getting 100% of the benefits. Nice to know when your practising Cobra pose but feel more like a axolotl.

The posture clinic was awesome with a show of a selection of advanced postures by four very flexible teachers. This was very humbling, and for a moment I was wondering what I was even doing here, whether I should close this website down and cancel my trip. But it just gave me something to aim for and after a year of practice every day, you just never know…

My friend Allie, teacher at Lane Cove was urging me to get up on stage for some posture wisdom from the man. It would have been a great photo opportunity but I was a little too chicken.
