6 months in, 180 days in a row but where the hell am I?

lost in the forest bowAnother month down and not just any: June, the halfway point! Shouldn’t I be all zen like, a lotus of tranquility, strong, buff and radiating yogic energy..? Maybe not!

“When we saw you, we thought, if that’s what doing Bikram Yoga everyday does to you, we don’t want a part of it!” Harsh words spoken more than once in the last few months, but I have to laugh, as I feel and see it in the mirror too. I’m worn out. One day it’s mental, the next physical, and lately it’s both. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when I’m soaring with the clouds or floating in an ocean of relaxation. But lately these are few and far between.

But it’s an experiment too, this challenge. Bikram says, it’s a daily practice and I totally subscribe to that train of thought, but right now, I kinda feel like a break. As I rode to the studio one day in Luzern, I felt I was on the way to work! Haha, that was when I knew I’d hit new lows! During class, as I lay in Savasana, I was sprawled elsewhere, in a savanna being mauled by the beasts of pain, desperation and exhaustion. I knew I was losing it but before I could reel in my racing breath, thumping heart, and crushed will, I cried out in silence: “I’ve had enough.. I want a day off.. I need it..  just one day and I’ll be ok”.

Aleksandra seeking the way forthI feel my practice has deteriorated and I’m sure the new progress pics will show this (I was even too tired to take them after class today). I feel slack, as if I just didn’t put the effort in last month and when I’m low, the good ol’ Catholic guilt kicks in: mind bashing me with not documenting the journey enough, not writing enough, “where’s the freakin video, Matt?!”

“Who are you doing this for anyway?” Aleksandra asked me on my last night in Luzern. Hmm good point. Time to reflect, regroup, regetoffmyass! Back to square one. Start again. What have I gained, what have I lost, and what do I want to do differently?

Giving up is not an option! Stay tuned folks, this month is going to be a killer.. whoo, yeah, pumped!!

Goodbye Mumbai, Hello Dubai

With 3 Bikram Yoga 30 Day Challenges completed (90 days continuous yoga), I find myself in another country starting all over again. Huzzah only 9 more challenges to go!

It’s bewildering to think I’m a quarter of the way through my journey already and yet I feel it’s all going too fast! 30 days may seem like enough, or even too much time in one city but I only just start to feel it’s pulse, then I’m off on the next adventure.

Looking back I wonder if I have achieved what I set out to do. Same answer for any month in our lives – yes and no. I wanted to produce more video but the time required to shoot, edit, compress and upload is immense, coupled with a slow internet connection and I’m sitting in front of my mac, wishing I was outside experiencing life.

Before leaving Australia I clearly prioritized my goals so one wouldn’t interfere with another. I never realised how important this was until my practice almost fell apart in India. I found it so tough I would end each class, my hands in namaskar thanking myself for just completing my #1 goal: “do the yoga, every day”. I can honestly say, I felt I had only 6 strong classes the whole month. Just getting through each class, practicing every posture without sitting down (or throwing up on myself) was.. well, I guess you’d could call it a challenge!

Thank you so much Rowena, Benn and Maddy (manager & teachers at Bikram Yoga Mumbai) for buying me Bikram’s new book “Bikram Yoga” – just what I needed for focus, inspiration and grounding for the next phase. Also thanks to Rich (teacher, Bikram Yoga Bangkok and Regional Manager True Fitness) for supporting my journey.

A little Bikram magic

Talk about funny moments while traveling – this was my first laugh once my feet flip flopped from the airport bus into the heart of a surprisingly clean, Bangkok city.

A friendly long haired face follows me off the bus and as we stand contemplating where to find coffee on this early Sunday morning he introduces himself as Cristian; a German living in Ibiza with a day to kill before heading south for the islands.

We chat over fresh pineapple from a street vendor and I tell him “I’m here on a bit of a world yoga journey” (my 30sec elevator pitch isn’t up to scratch yet).

“Oh really” he replies “have you heard of Bikram Yoga?”

Well as a matter of fact…

Skins – ICE vs Sport

Some exciting news to report:

You may remember my post, “I’m just not ready for marble smugglers” in the search to find suitable yoga wear to replace my old bike shorts. During research, I read some interesting info about Skins and their BioAcceleration Technology.

Basically, it’s body moulded, compression clothing that helps you reduce fatigue and muscle soreness while aiding faster recovery.

Impressive reading, so I sent off a quick email to Skins asking if they could recommend a product, suitable for the high heat environment of Bikram Yoga.

I received a call the next day! Although they had not conducted any product testing in a controlled 40 deg Celcius heated room or similar environment they offered me the opportunity to test their Skins ICE half tights and short sleeve top (free of charge) and provide some constructive feedback.

I was curious to find out how the Skins sport range would also perform so I offered to trial both the Skins ICE and Sport to see if they are suitable.

I usually just wear bottoms, so why a top?

Good question. It’s so hot I’m not sure I want to wear anything on top and to tell the truth, I feel a little self conscious wearing a high tech, full Lycra get up. But if I’m going to test something, I want to do it properly – even if I invoke a few chuckles along the way!

Plus, Skins claim to “focus muscle power and dramatically reduce muscle vibration”. I’m curious to test this out, for example, in some postures, especially Triangle, my muscles sometimes shake uncontrollably as I stretch my arms apart. If Skins help, then I may be able to focus on taking my posture deeper rather than fighting to control it.

Products under test:

Skins ICE half tights, short sleeve top.

Skins Sport half tights, short sleeve CROM top.

I’ll be testing Skins over the next month and will let you know how they perform. If you have any experience with Skins and Bikram Yoga, I’d be very interested to hear your story.

Heating up my ACT

A call to the southern state (Australian Capital Territory) for duty as an uncle and the opportunity to put my body through its paces – Bikram Yoga, mountain biking and bunch rides with a few Crossfit training sessions thrown in.

No Bikram Yoga in Canberra, I hear you mutter? Well luck has it my good friends, Nick and Ally have recently relocated here. Ally, an accredited Bikram teacher, is in the process of setting up a mini studio in her house for personal practice and private instruction. If you think a standard Bikram Yoga class is powerful, try a “one on one” workshop!

As Ally guided me through each posture, I wondered… was there sacred, unspoken wisdom behind the standard dialogue that would open up my body for the perfect Standing Bow? Alas it was not so, my Standing Bow may as well be called knotted plank pose.

Ally working itHowever, a “one on one” gives you the opportunity to pause and ask questions, expose your weaknesses, harness your strengths and take your postures to the next level. With subtleties fleshed out, tweaked and put into muscle memory, I floated out the door, stress and futility replaced by happiness and contentment.

I really didn’t think I’d have that much fun in Canberra but a great time was had with family and friends. Bunch rides (road cycling) with my brother, Mick and mountain biking and Crossfit training with Nick.

It was action packed and I definitely worked my body, but I still rate Bikram Yoga as the perfect all rounder. Strength, stretching, alignment and mind/body control rolled into one.

If you’re in Canberra and would like an introduction to Bikram, let me know and I will refer you to Ally, whose studio will hopefully be up and running soon.
