Walkabout in Centro Històrico

Day of the Dead looms closerYou never know what you’re going to see when you go walkabout. I don’t really plan my outings, just decide where to go, walk, bus or train then follow my instincts, stumbling upon the weird and wonderful.

We’ve spent a few days wandering around the suburbs and the city, both during the week and on the weekend. Last Saturday we were caught in the massive weekend crowds in Centro Històrico, so we just put the map in the back pocket and went with the flow.

TT Fall 09 – Happy as a Pig in ***t

Bikram Yoga Teacher Training – Fall 09 is in the 3rd week, so congratulations to all the students who made it to the Las Vegas torture chamber! For those of us who haven’t been, we can only try and imagine what it might be like, physically and mentally and emotionally.

I’ve met a few yogis in my travels who are currently at Fall 09 Teacher Training and I’ve asked if they would like to write a few words in the coming weeks. I’m not interested in gossip, rumours or exposing the students to judgment, so the guest posts will of course be anonymous, providing just a snapshot of what’s going on in their head, heart or body at that moment in time. So here goes…

Aztec sculpture - Museum of Anthropology MexicoTeacher training week 1

Having worked up to this moment for the last two years I was full of all sorts of emotions as I landed in Las Vegas.  I’d spoken to so many people and heard so many stories that I really didn’t know what to think.   I’d heard how they try and brain wash you, how they will test you and make it as hard as possible, find your weak spots, and work away at them.  And all of this is true and I’m sure will become much more so as the weeks go by.   What people didn’t talk about so much, was just how bloody great the training is. They didn’t tell me just how amazing Bikram is.  His energy, his charisma, his sense of humour (thought I was going to choke laughing in Rabbit pose the other day as he was talking about women and PMS).  More than all of that, they didn’t tell me just how amazing he is as a teacher and a leader generally.  Watching him listen to hundreds of people recite Half Moon and hearing him say just what everyone needed to hear was qutie inspiring.  They also didn’t say much about his spirituality which I think oozes from every pore.  And that’s just Bikram.  Rajeshree has been an absolute delight, her soothing voice (with steely determination running beneath it) and her incredible warmth.  We have been told time and time again to just ‘trust the process’ and at this point in time I really do, more so that I ever thought I would.  I get what they are trying to do and how they are trying to do it and I do think it will work.  I think there will be times when I will want to leave and go home, cry and never watch another Bollywood movie in my life but I am sure it works and I am as happy as a pig in ***t.

Pyramids of Teotihuacan

on the sun, moon in the background

We had a highly entertaining class on Sunday. Entertaining because if I had closed my eyes and listened to the all the moaning, panting and groaning I could have imagined myself in a swingers club, not Bikram Yoga Mexico – Lomas studio. I cant judge though, because I remember in my early days of practice, I was even told to shut up during one particularly challenging class and I’m only just managing to real in my heavy breathing now. But it’s great to lose it in class occasionally, laughing so hard and wondering if you’ll ever be able to regain you composure!Pyramid of the Moon

A great start to our day and after a quick lunch, Mafra took Santiago (also a Bikram teacher at BYM), Veronika and I to see the Pyramids of Teotihuacan! We didn’t have that much time to take it all in but managed to walk along the Avenue of the Dead to the Pyramid of the Sun which we climbed and posed for a few pictures before the archaeological site closed for the day. Thanks Mafra!!

The photos unfortunately aren’t that clear due to some raindrops on the lens effecting the focus.. oh well, a good excuse to go back for an in depth look.

Clearing the headspace

Clapped out but keeping the faithLately I wouldn’t be going too far if I said I was detesting the practice. You may remember my post, “Jinxed on Grouse Mountain” early in September when I realised I was bored to tears with my practice. After chatting with a few people the same comments were being thrown around; “you went through the physical (exhaustion started in India) and now you’re going through the mental (stress surfaced in Switzerland)”. “Hmm righto, what’s next?” and to my trepidation the reply, “Haha your next biggest challenge will be emotional”. Oh great, looking forward to that one!

Every now and again though, I have a good class and I think, OK I’ve passed this barrier. The next day, I again fall into a self absorbed cyclic nightmare starting with Prana-boring-yama, Half-arsed-Moon, and before I even get to Standing-middle finger-Bow, Lighting the fireI’m telling the teacher to shut the F*#@ up, and complete the rest of the class either seething in utter contempt or thinking about going for a surf.

BUT now, I think I may have found my ‘get out of jail free card’ after 2 rocking classes at the Bikram Yoga San Angel studio, led by Cecilia Vez and head maestro and owner, Ulises Calatayud. What’s different? Little old me; making the decision to focus in Prana-uplifting-yama and hammer it in Half-to the max-Moon and by the time I get to Standing-skies the limit-bow, I’m one grinning, sweaty yogi again!

Check out some pics of Coyoacan, where I was staying for the first few days and my new neighbourhood in Condesa.

Landing in Mexico City

Plaza in CoyaocanSometimes a last minute decision pays off, sometimes not. This time, I feel I’m where I should be – Mexico City!

I arrived at 2:30am, after a delayed connecting flight from Dallas so I spent the first night curled up on the floor of the airport.. nice! The next morning I booked myself into a quiet little hostel in Coyoacan, a very artsy neighborhood south of the city and within walking distance of Bikram Yoga Mexico‘s San Angel Studio. Of course I got lost walking to class the first day, then nearly knocked off the hostel bike the next but I’m glad to be somewhere so culturally different from Australia.

I’d been warned to only carry a few pesos in pocket, enough to sustain a healthy appetite of quesadillas, enfrijoladas and huevos frigoles, washed down with an ice cold horchata, so I was a little on edge and didn’t even take my camera out on Saturday night, much to my disappointment as it was packed with locals celebrating yet another festival; apparently October is a great month to be in town!

Oh I just realized I gotta run to class! I’ll finish this post off tonight and also post a few pics. Adios!

Vancouver Island getaway

October 1, 2009 at 3:11 am in On The Street, Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

Victoria, Vancouver IslandEveryone loves getting out of the big city once in a while so I was pretty stoked that my Aussie mate, Ryan organized a little getaway to Vancouver Island last weekend. We caught the Ferry across to Sidney then rode the 30 or so kms down to Victoria just in time to hit the 3:45pm class at Bikram Yoga Saanich.

It was so incredibly refreshing for me to practice at Saanich. This is the first time I’ve really broken my tradition of practicing at the one studio for the whole month but it would have been a quick trip otherwise and since it takes a while to transit to Vancouver Island, I wanted to spend a night there and soak up the vibes.

HanginIt was really inspiring to walk into the studio to see a huge 30 Day Challenge wall with 50+ names! It felt like I was practicing in a room full of energy – everyone striving for that little bit of magic which you feel when doing a challenge. I know it sounds cliched but I’ve felt very mentally flat lately and the yogis there really lifted my spirits! Plus Victoria is stunning and very relaxing. I practiced with Ida teaching on the Saturday and Peter on Sunday. Both were solid, concrete, with Ida having the same energy and style as Rowena (in Mumbai) which rocked me early in my journey. Thanks so much Anastasia & Abbey (studio owners) and the teachers and yogis I practiced with.

It was also cool to stay the night, Couch Surfing with Ryan and Frida – thanks for the hospitality and great night!

I’m off to Mexico next, so if you know anyone down that way let them know I’m coming and would love to catch up.
