Gracia Festival, Barcelona

Gracia Festival

We were lucky enough to catch the Gracia Festa Major during our stay in Barcelona. The Gracia Festival is where the streets of the Gracia neighborhood come alive from 15th – 21st August with the streets festooned with artistic designs and decorations.

This year the festival is dedicated to Nova canco, the anti-Franco musical movement that was born in Catalunya in the 50′s. In 1942, 70 streets and 5 squares were decorated; by 1977, there were less than 5. This year I’m not sure how many participated but there were more than enough to keep you busy for a few nights. Prizes are awarded for decorations incorporating recycled material, lighting, artistic detail and tradition.

Our apartment is within walking distance of this huge sprawling festival so it was awesome to spend a few nights walking amongst the crowds, wandering down the many streets; canopies full of light and colour.

Barcelona closes mid August.. wtf?!

August 18, 2009 at 4:43 pm in Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

stretch up, stretch down, every muscle workingAs fate would have it, Bikram Yoga Barcelona closed its doors for maintenance 13 – 16 August. Smack bang in the middle of my 30 day challenge… nice!

I was informed a little late (mid July) to change location. My sister, Heidi and I, planned a rendezvous way back in January and with our Barcelona apartment booked and paid for, scouting out another location for the month wasn’t an option. I looked into practicing at another Spanish studio from Thursday – Sunday. Bikram Yoga Madrid: closed. Bikram Yoga Ibiza: closed Saturday. Bikram Yoga Marseilles, France (next closest): also closed, although Corinne (owner/teacher) kindly said I could join her and the other teachers for practice. Unfortunately it wasn’t in my budget.

Things were looking a little grim when Charlie (Bikram teacher at Barcelona) offered to teach, with Jess and Todd (fellow yogis) offering up their apartment as our location. Sorted! So Charlie, Jess, Todd, Veronika and I got down and sweaty, heating up the living room and practicing in the hottest part of the day to get the conditions close to ideal. It was pretty cool actually: hard tiled floor, no mirrors, Charlie delivering dialogue through his practice and the longest, peaceful, final savasanas I’ve had.

Perfect. Thanks guys!

falling for an old dogs tricks

Spending an evening strolling the streets of Barcelona’s Barri Gotic can take you anywhere your feet or heart desire. Along streets, through plazas, into bars abuzz. Then adrift again, down vacant alleys, around bends before the fun begins again. You can eat your way though as many hours as tapas, indulge in sights and sounds and sangria, and once you realize the time is nigh, the metro falls silent and the night bus becomes your ways and means.

It was just such an evening, when suddenly, my thoat snatches my inhale, my face morphs from wanderlust to incomprehension to dread… oh shit! My falling eyes are pulled left. The shadow comes to life revealing a perfect row of teeth, framed by erect incisors jutting from a hairy bottom jaw. Wet heat licks its way between my toes, around my flip flop, up my foot, and my eyes find their resting place. The biggest, sloppiest, smelliest dog turd I have ever seen caresses me in all the wrong ways.

The bottom jaw prowls towards me, attached to an enormous black dog, hind legs higher than the fore, giving him more menace than most… I freeze. He comes very close, eyes locked with mine, he sniffs around my foot then breaks into a proud grin, “yep, that one’s mine”.

What was it you said Bikram, “Don’t let anyone steel you peace”?

nearly a show stopper

Getting injured. It had to happen sooner or later but I put on a show in the process.

There I was, flying down a hill on my trusty Dahon bike, on route to the 10am (and only for the day) Bikram class. I felt my steering go a little weird (mental note: take Sabrina back to the bike shop for a re-check). The next instant, everything went horribly wrong and I found myself flying over the handle bars.. Aren’t these things supposed to happen in slow motion?!

A few judo rolls later (thanks to attaining the lofty heights of green belt), I find myself on my feet assessing the situation: Puncture in front wheel, a little bark off the hand, leg, lower back and a sore ankle. Phew, glad I was wearing a helmet! Time still on the clock? Check. Slip in a new tube, pump it up, climb back on the saddle and make the class!

Matt’s hot travel tip #3: Send your kids to judo.. minimum green belt!

The pain comes later and I realize I’ve sprained my ankle, the Bikram heat keeping it at bay till I get home. Darn, I’ll have less ice for the Sangria now that I have to share it with my ankle!

snakes and ladders

pretty in pinkWhether I’m walking, running or riding to my Bikram Yoga class, I zig zag my way across the board map of Barcelona. A roll of the dice sends me tumbling or climbing, a snake down, a ladder home; a Carrer del here, a Gran Via there, a Passeig perhaps; exploring my home for the month, my next cafe solo, my next baguette.

I’m loving the city layout, each intersection framed by buildings with chopped corners, housing the many bars, cafes and shops that keep the local vibe alive.

Lost in translation

August 6, 2009 at 2:00 am in On The Street | Please subscribe!

oh wise one please help my EspanolTaking a morning break, I found myself relaxing at a local cafe in Barcelona with the chicas (girls) behind my webpage design and support cookieweb.ie.

Embracing our surroundings, we offered the waiter our best Espanol: For the girls, “dos cafe con leche” (2 coffees with milk) and I, a simple “uno espresso por favor” (1 coffee please). Then with a growing air of confidence, we translated our way down the small bocadillo (sandwich) menu, propped against the doorway.

I was feeling quite the smarty pants, having progressed to CD 10 of my Spanish lessons while Heidi, at CD 3 and Orla, CD 1 were holding their own. The girls coffees where whisked onto the table and then to their delight, and my sheepish consternation, a bottle of Estrella beer appeared in front of me.. wtf?! Espresso = Estrella. Ha ha, I should have ordered “uno cafe solo” Heidi had quipped, when I placed my order.

I settled into my beer, mentally rescheduling my 14:15 Bikram Yoga class to the later 19:00 and murmered to myself quietly, “no problema”.

Tack så mycket Malmö

The iconic Turning Torso in MalmöThank you very much Malmö!

Bikram Yoga Malmö was one of my favourite studios to date. Wonderful people, great atmosphere, energy and well needed relaxation time.

I was also privileged to have some inspiring teachers, Mine, Joshua, Alison, Guru and Whitney (dropping in from Stockholm). It was also a pleasure to take classes from Maria and Oriana, fresh from Spring 09 Teachers Training. Taking their first class, watching their confidence blossom and every class get stronger, I felt I was part of something special.. as if it were my home studio. I guess that shows how comfortable I felt in Malmö. Lastly: Erik, you’re a legend and perfect host mate, cheers!

Now back to the Tapas and beer.. Adiós amigos!

fold up, pack up, move on

zeroGosh, I just realised I haven’t blogged about my wheels! You’ve probably read on my website my intention to “go green” during this journey. I guess I’m trying my best in a number of ways, although all those air miles will have me planting trees in backyards around Australia for the next year.. hmm next challenge maybe.

Before I digress further, I’m trying to tell you about my fold up bike. I bought a Dahon Jetstream while in Budapest and have been using it, predominately as my sole source of transport since. Bike (12 kgs) + Suitcase (4 kgs) + The rest (4 kgs) = Aircraft baggage limit (20kgs). Lucky I’m a little tacker! It’s not quite a simple process of just folding up and packing. I have to strip it down to the frame before little Sabrina will fit in.

Here are a set of pics of what I have to go through each time I fold up, pack up and move on:

Last night in Sweden

reflections
You wouldn’t read about it. My last night in Malmo, Sweden and I get lost! I thought I’d be a smart cookie and take the bus home from Bikram Yoga Malmo. It was late but I wanted to confirm the route I would be traveling the next morning to the 09:30 class with all my gear, and then on completion, straight to Copenhagen airport. Just to explain quickly: I have been riding everyday to yoga and this was the first time I’d caught the bus. Anyway, there I was sitting up the front to keep an eye on where the bus was going and.. hello Mr. Blanket Show: I fell asleep!

Yes, I can hear you laughing now but I can tell you, I was about as far from smiling as I was from my stop: some 6 stops past my stop! Of course I alighted at the next chance and while trying to work out where I was (by now 11pm) the return bus drove past me! (Insert your favourite swear word here)!! So with the next bus not for another half hour I walked most of the way home.

It was a pleasant walk of sorts though, as I got to practice my swear words in every language I’ve stumbled across so far!
