Mounting Pilatus

Gondola ride to Mt Pilatus

With movements restricted on and off the past few days due to inclement weather, I’ll reminisce on a perfect day atop Mt Pilatus, high above Luzern, Switzerland.

Rope ParkSonja’s good friend, Ruth Ott, Leiterin Personal (HR Manager) for Pilatus-Bahnen offered to take Sonja, Julie and I on a complimentary tour! After a breakfast of coffee and croissants we climbed aboard our little red bubble for the gentle gondola ride upwards through a luscious nature corridor; a serenade of Alp horns announcing our arrival at Frakmuntegg (1460m). We quickly rigging up with a safety harnesses to make our way through central Switzerland’s largest suspension rope challenge. We climbed and swung our way through the more moderate obstacles before tackling the hardest course: an exhilarating exercise of balance, strength and fear suppression, leaving muscles quivering at the thought of our looming 4pm Bikram class.

View to Swiss AlpsFeeling a little rubbery, we continued via arial cable-way to the summit. Drawn to the edge, you could almost imagine sitting with your legs dangling off the side of a cloud. A magnificent patchwork of blooming green, sliding grey and frozen white as far as squinting eyes could see. Opposite and competing for the jaw gaping view, Lake Luzern painted far below, with Luzern city and the many villages hugging its shores. As another ensemble of Alp horns and old time yodelers evoked images of long mountain treks and breathing in pure 2132m Swiss air, it wasn’t long before the gnawing emptiness in our stomachs awoke the need to fuel up with a hearty buffet.

Cogwheel Railway - steepest railway in the worldNot to be outdone, we descended the mountain in alarming style, gripped by the white fingered title, “steepest railway in the world”. The Cogwheel railway consists of single carriages inching slowly down a 48% gradient. Our wide eyes, reflecting alarming images of lines breaking, brakes failing and wheels flying off as we screech and plummet to our impending deaths; an enthralling pantomime for children looking skywards as parents shield their own faces in horror.

Alas it was not to be, instead balancing in a front row seat as we looked up, down and sideways, breathtaking beauty winding past our open windows, the cool air dancing on our skin, teasingly reminding us of the heat waiting for us in the mirrored torture chamber, far below.

Thanks Ruth for a wonderful day.

Hot numbers at Bikram Yoga Luzern!

June 22, 2009 at 9:49 am in Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

Home of my Global Bender Month, SwitzerlandWe had a record today with 22 hot yogis in class! It may not sound like many, but it’s a new studio in this small, but oh so lovely city of Luzern in Switzerland, so Liliane & Julie (owner/teachers) are still building numbers and awareness.

It was such a surprise, when I quietly opened the door to so many yogis limbering up for the Sunday 4pm class. I was so moved I turned straight around and walked back to the desk, asking Liliane & Julie how many yogis had shown up. It was great to see the excitement and pride in their eyes as the new record was set.

Lovely LuzernThe energy in the room was clearly buzzing before class and as I locked eyes with a few of the regulars, I could see they were equally impressed. Then we started and the heat wiped the smile off my dial real quick! I managed to resurrect it at least once each posture though, to refocus and relax as Liliane led us through yet another powerful class.

Congrat’s to Liliane and Julie, I hope this is just the beginning for seeing big classes all Summer at Bikram Yoga Luzern!

Global Benders at Bikram Yoga Kearny Mesa

Following is a Facebook message from Alisa Loigman a yogi from Bikram Yoga Kearny Mesa, San Diego, California. I hope you don’t mind me posting your message here Alisa, but I thought it truly inspiring, not just for yogis at Kearny Mesa, but everyone around the world doing the Global Bender Challenge. Thanks Alisa!

“Today is June 15th and we are officially half way through the June Bender, 30-day challenge. Congratulations to all of you who are participating. Everyone has stayed so effortlessly enthusiastic! There is a small group of you yogis doing doubles some days- to all of you, keep up the momentum! And to those of you challenging yourself to do 30 classes in 30-days or just step up your regular practice, you are all a joy to watch- I personally have loved experiencing the vibrant group energy in classes that I take with you. I also have noticed that through this challenge many students are making new friends and having pre yoga social time in the lobby- I encourage you to get to know one another, through each other you can find and share great encouragement- everything is easier with support! You can easily spot the other challenge participants as they mark their accomplishments on the challenge board.

Alisa Loigman & Charles Shannon back bending at Bikram Yoga Kearny MesaHere is an extra thought for all of you to ponder- This is a 30 day challenge, and come June 30th you will have officially reached your personal June goals. Just because the 30 days is over does not mean you should stop there. Come back for day 31, 32 and eventually it will become day 45 or even day 60! Imagine the possibilities then! You are all on such a roll, challenge yourself to take that extra step or two, come to class on July 1st.
I will be there, hopefully, so will you too!

You are all awesome!”

From, Alisa Loigman

Just so you know, Alisa has just informed me that BY Kearny Mesa has 50 yogis signed up for the Global Bender.. Wow great to have you all aboard!

New Progress Pics for May

June 16, 2009 at 12:37 am in Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

Dandayamana janushirasanaI’ve just updated my Progress Page to display the latest photos (for May). The pictures were actually taken by Liliane after I arrived in Luzern as things got a little crazy during the last few days in Budapest. This happened in the last 3 locations so at least I’m consistent!

So the photo may not be a spectacular rendition of Dandayamana Janushirasana: my left leg is a little low, I’m leaning to far back, am sporting a little fat roll and I forgot to pull my pants up properly over my butt! But it marks a special point in my practice – May was the first month I’ve ever locked “both” knees!

So how am I doing now? Well, last week I was struggling a fair bit. When it all comes together it’s magic, when it doesn’t, I try to imagine lying on a beach getting a tan on a very hot day.. hey it works for the first 5 or 10 seconds! But I’m back to practicing some strong classes again. Speaking with other yogis here, they felt the same, so it’s good to know I wasn’t suffering alone!

Timo, a teacher from Zurich dropped in for a Saturday afternoon class and showed me how to do the back bending properly (hands walking backwards down the wall), so I can start to open up a bit more and hopefully go a little deeper during class. It’s a pretty intense thing doing 10 of these after class but will be a new challenge for the next month and we’ll see how I go.

Thanks for all the comments and emails coming through, it’s very inspiring for me especially knowing how many other yogis are practicing the Global Bender challenge with me right now!

Nightmare on Truellhof Strasse

June 12, 2009 at 7:21 am in On The Street | Please subscribe!

“I have a small ‘program’ for you today” Sonja smiles when I finally drag my tired, ruffled body out of bed. It’s 10:30 and I’m kicking myself for not getting up before 08:00 when the hot water was turned off in the apartment block for maintenance over the next 3 days. A vision of cold showers brings chicken skin rippling around my body like a break dancers wave. It doesn’t help when Sonja energetically exclaims she was up before 8:00 for the last hot shower and has already been shopping for fresh breakfast rolls.

Back to the ‘program’ and a routine of chin-ups, push-ups and sit-ups springs to mind. We completed a 1.5 hour bike ride through surrounding villages yesterday before yoga and I’m wondering if Sonja is planning to up the ante every day. In Budapest, Rob’s 30 day challenge was to entice me with Pranayama of a different kind; Is Sonja also hoping to sabotage my sojourn, and is that really Vitamin B complex in those little brown smarties my nurse prescribed? Hmm I’ll have to watch this one!

Thankfully no, the program was to meet Erica, (Sonja’s boss) at the hospital for lunch and it had to be today! A weird request you might think, so let me explain: Erica was first enthusiastic about Sonja hosting a knock about Australian bloke, but pleasant thoughts were soon replaced by a nightmare involving a glinting knife, lots of blood and Sonja missing the next day of work. OMG, what?! So her boss had to vet me, making sure I didn’t own a knife, or if I did, would only be used for Crocodile Dundee acts of heroism, and more importantly Sonja would be remain as punctual and Swiss like, as usual.

So I meet Erica in the hospital cafeteria, sitting at a table of six, during a very busy lunch. I chuckle to myself: a safe place with nurses and doctors on hand, just in case I was to erupt in a psychopathic rage, jumping upon the table to reveal my weapon of choice perhaps? Ha ha, I was almost tempted to bring the ugliest blade from Sonja’s kitchen, just to pop on the table as we shook hands! But the thought of screams, mass hysteria and nurses flying through the air, spearing me with pre-prepared horse tranquilizers before waking in a padded room in the most clinical Swiss asylum, unfortunately prevented the comical thought from becoming even close to reality!

Instead I glinted my sweetest larrikin smile as we chatted about my love of Luzern, Erica and her husband’s 3 previous trips to Australia (including him cycling across the Nullarbor, Australia’s 4352 km wide desert – who’s the crazy one now?) and I pass the test with flying colours, minus the red of course! ;)

Global Bender record?

June 9, 2009 at 6:26 am in On The Street, Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

Matt, Aleksandra & Johanna at Bikram Yoga Luzern

It was great news to hear from Ray Mathews on the Global Bender Facebook Group, “We have your back here in sunny Southern California… there are 45 people signed up for the June Global Bender Challenge at Bikram Yoga Kearny Mesa“.

WOW, can you believe it, is this a record? Let’s find out!

It would be great to find out how many yogis are doing the challenge at each participating studio, hear how people are feeling: if it’s their first or fifth challenge, have some cool pictures posted and share the love!

I’d like to do a post about each studio so please email your pictures and tell me what’s happening at your local!buzzing after class

To start the ball rolling, here are a few photos of Aleksandra, Johanna and I at Bikram Yoga Luzern. The girls are doing their first 30 Day Challenge ever! Their last challenge was 10 days in a row so this is a big achievement. Aleksandra even started the challenge 7 days earlier as she has to travel for work before the end of June: Kudos Aleksandra, others would have used this as an excuse!

Bring it on yogis!

Going for “magnum” in Luzern

June 5, 2009 at 6:27 am in On The Street, Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

I’m still finding my feet in this gorgeous little city of Luzern. For some reason my compass is not working at all and I keep turning left when I should be going right. I’m not sure if I’m suffering from the same affliction as Derek Zoolander but since I’m on the bike, I end up about 1km down the road before I realise my “blue steel” pout is getting me nowhere fast!

Then there is my lack of focus during class. Did someone steel my mojo in Budapest? I have no drishti and I’m only managing to pull it together once I reach the floor series. I’m wondering if it has something to do with the energy in class. In Budapest, there were a lot of yogis in the room and I felt I was able to tap into that combined energy, at times drawing on or channeling it somehow.

At Bikram Yoga Luzern, the classes are smaller as the studio is quite new. I think I’ll have to find my practice again, try to dig deep and draw everything from within, instead of around me. Hmm we’ll see how it goes.

I’m very settled in my new home though, sharing Sonja’s gorgeous little one bedroom apartment in the northern part of the city, in a quiet area, up a very steep hill. I’m set up with a mattress on the floor in the living room which opens onto a little garden area which is great to relax with a morning cuppa. Sonja’s a nurse and has already administered some medication for me: vitamin B12 which may be lacking in my diet. Thanks Sonja!

Thanks also, Liliane (Bikram Yoga Luzern owner/teacher) for a lovely, relaxing lunch today; great food, company and conversation. I’m sure I’ll find my feet, focus and “magnum” next class! (Make sure you check out the link, it’s an Italian dubbed version!)

The abstract photos are of my train journey from Zurich to Luzern. For more photos check out my Flikr album.

Double Class: Day One, Global Bender!

June 3, 2009 at 1:19 am in On The Street, Yoga Practice | Please subscribe!

Old Town, ZurichArriving in Switzerland was somewhat of a shock. I was feeling a little numb, not quite sure if I was ready (see Clean Slate) so what better way to throw myself into month five and the Global Bender by doing a double.

Timo (teacher at Bikram Yoga Zurich) had emailed me several weeks before asking if I’d be interested in coming to Zurich for the Global Bender in June. He was a great help, advising me on the different Bikram studios / countries I was considering. When I decided on Bikram Yoga Luzern, he offered me a bed and a tour of Zurich before transiting to Luzern the next day.

Of course he had to throw in the challenge, “Take my 09:00 class in Zurich before catching the train for the 16:00 class in Luzern”. Hmm Righto mate, you’re on!

I arrived in Zurich at 16:25 on Sunday 31 May, immediately touched with Swiss hospitality: Timo met me at airport, handshake in one hand, train tickets (airport to the city and Zurich to Luzern) in the other. “Consider it a little sponsorship” he says with a welcoming smile. A stir in my stomach, tingle up my spine then a flashback of faces explode before my eyes.. unrivaled generosity everywhere I go.

Matt and TimoWe go for dinner at a vegetarian buffet and I think, “Awesome, eat as much as you can lad”. I heap my plate high, each taste bud jumping up and down like excited little children, stomach palpitating. Timo directs me to the scales.. wtf, I have to weigh my plate? Oh shit! The bill shouts “47.00 Swiss Franks” and Timo exclaims, “A new record!”

We take a cobblestone tour of Zurich, perfection peers around each corner and I feel like a rough stone in a manicured playground. Up early for 09:00 class and I’m still feeling a little out of place. I breath my way through the heat, Timo’s trance like, deep voice helping to oil the hinges but the door opens only when the train glides silently into Luzern. Ok I’m home again.

Clean Slate

June 3, 2009 at 1:17 am in On The Street | Please subscribe!

After yet another touching farewell I find myself alone again. Well, not quite as I’m locked with many in a cylindrical bubble, vibrating on the runway about to hurtle towards another location, another challenge, another.. home.

We’re pushed back into our seats as the aircraft hungrily eats its way into the sky, sniffing an uncertain future, gnawing at expectations and swallowing my 30 day habitual life before spitting out swirling pieces of past: experience gained, opportunities lost, faces frozen in goodbyes and a growing knapsack of memories.

I glance out the small, oval, airplane window as Budapest gently drops below, pulling the spider web tendrils that tug one last time at my heart before they snap and the city which felt so much like a home away from home, disappears in a white cloud.. wow that was quick.

A clean slate. I keep staring out the window, hovering in never never land, not quite ready to imagine my next adventure. Suddenly the clouds part: a window into the past as Budapest is revealed far below but before I can smile it’s snatched away again.

Hmm yes, I understand now. I’m constantly moving forward but there’s always time to reflect on the past.
:)

Thank you all in Budapest who helped me find my way.

Sorry for the absence of photos, for some reason I cant upload photos to accompany my posts and will get the problem sorted asap.
