Spanish Snake Inferno

September 30, 2008 at 12:27 pm in Everyday | Please subscribe!

I sit in lotus, eyes glazed. My mind faraway as I stroll the beach of Playa Jaco, with a lovely Costa Rican woman “Lo siento, pero no comprendo lo que dice.” (I am sorry but I don’t understand what you are saying.)

“Snake?! Matt!” I hear faintly.

¿Qué? (What?) I respond, leaping over the wave as it runs up the beach… a sea snake?!

“Matt!” I hear loudly this time and realise it’s my fathers voice from the next door neighbours house.

As I morph from lotus to springing grass-hopper, my iPod pulls from my ears and my Costa Rican beauty (spanish teacher) bids her farewell. I run towards the danger, haphazardly grabbing my finest snake catching implement (straw broom) while getting ready to produce my best “crikey” the minute I see the snake!

No snake but smoke, billowing from the dishwasher and quickly filling the house. I’m instructed to run home and retrieve the fire extinguisher from the garage. Back at the scene, I instinctively shout, “shut off power at the main board” (thanks to daily fire fighting drills from my Navy days). Once power is isolated by Dad, I pull the pin on the extinguisher, open the dishwasher door and push the leaver down to suffocate the fire with dry powder… nothing. Wtf!

I start yelling for a hose and bucket as I fill all manner of implements on the kitchen sink with water and douse the flames. It’s nearly out when dad runs in with another fire extinguisher and empties it into the dying flames.

“Where’s the snake” I ask? He grins. When our neighbour sounded the alarm, dad, being a forester in countless bush towns across Queensland, was regularly called for emergencies, the majority of these being… you guessed it, snakes!

Safety Notes: (All jokes aside) Don’t leave electrical appliances running unattended. The dishwasher was left running while the neighbours went for a bike ride. The fire was discovered by their mother dropping in for a visit, in the nick of time I’d say!

You want to practice where?!

I’ve been hammering my Bikram Yoga Worldwide Locations Map (google map) in the last week and have just completed entering the locations of all the Bikram Yoga studio’s outside the United States, which is into the 160′s! To think I’ll be visiting only 12 of them is a little sad.

With only the United States to go, the map is almost finished, right? Ah no… the United States is home to more than half of all the worldwide studio’s. Hmm that’s home to a lot of bent or should I say bendy people.

To find a studio near, or very far, click here. If you want a closer look, click on the “view larger map” link underneath the map!

For now though, I’m off to practice Savasana…

Awkward Pose Leads The Pack

Back on the Sunshine Coast and with the older bro Mick in town, it was up at dawn, on the bike & up to Pippies cafe in Mooloolaba to meet the cycling crew for the morning ride. It’s been 18 months since my last bunch ride, and don’t I feel it right about now! With a dull ache spreading through my chicken legs, I just know Yoga tonight is going to be a killer!

We rode from Mooloolaba to Caloundra return and although it was an easy ride by cycling standards, it can be quite a challenge for the uninitiated. Crammed together like sardines, pulsating colour, a circus of hand signals pointing out divets, rocks, cars and swooping magpies. The only thing I got right was the coffee at the halfway point!

18 months ago, I dropped off the bunch at about the 20km mark (hey it’s fast ok!) but this time I managed to hold on until the last stretch and I’m sure it all came down to leg muscle strength and stamina gained from Awkward Pose!

Oh and Mick highly rated the Bikram Yoga session at Maroochydore so if there are any Bikram Yoga teachers in Canberra, Australia, you’ll have one frothing yogi on your doors when you open.

Going Green with a Folding Bike

If you’ve read about my intentions to “Go Green” in The Challenge, you’ll see I’m committed to making my travels as eco friendly as possible. Yes I’ll be burning through the ozone as I fly between destinations but as soon as I hit the ground I’ll be unzipping my bag and riding off on an ultra light folding bike.

That’s the plan anyway, so I’m on the search for a suitable set of wheels to take with me and today I test rode a Dahon Mu SL. Thanks to an aluminium frame, the super light Mu SL weighs in at only 8.7 kgs (19.4lbs).

With fold up dimensions of 36 x 64 x 81 cm (14″ x 25″ x 32″) that’s small and light enough to pack in with my clothes and still be under the airline luggage limit!

Some will say it looks a little clown-ish but the bike rode surprisingly well, is comfortable, speedy and has some decent running gear. It’ll be perfect for getting to and from yoga and cruising the streets while I’m away. When folded, it’s small enough to take on a bus or train for longer commutes.

With a price tag of around AUD $1800 it’s quite expensive. There are cheaper fold ups but none I’ve found (so far) as light as the Mu SL. It would be nice if I could score some sponsorship from Dahon… hmm, I might just give these guys a call and see how we go. I’ll keep you posted…

A Willing Victim

Fresh out of the Tranquil Loft and I’m probably feeling more lofty than tranquil, having undergone some serious Traction, Active Release and another technique called Large Elbow Deep Diggin, otherwise known as deep tissue massage!

“I had the crowbar out today” a grinning Will Elrick explains. With a “Flamin’ heck” thrown in for good measure, I can just imagine Will cracking a macadamia nut between his forefinger and thumb.

Will’s speciality is Active Release and if I could afford to take a massage therapist on my trip, he would be the man. Only problem is, he has his own journey planned. Wtf mate?

With a sparkle to his eyes, you know there’s more to the man than his larrikin smile. If you think Mt Everest is old news, think again as this bloke is about to get your attention real quick!

Check out Will’s journey here.

For those interested in a great massage, Will is based in Sydney. When I’m on the Sunshine Coast, Manyia is the undisputed queen of massage and is also a Bikram Yoga teacher. More on Manyia soon.
